DIRECTOR'S NOTE FROM THE PLAYBILL
When I was introduced to Hadestown, it was the Off-Broadway Cast recording and I was immediately mesmerized by the score and storytelling. The heartbreaking myth I knew so well was suddenly elevated in a way that was unexpected to me, and I couldn't get enough.
The first visual image I had for this production was the looming tree that I associated with the Off-Broadway production, but I wanted to lean into more. I took the railroad line on the way to Hell literally and placed our concept in the 1930's Dust Bowl era; complete with "out-of-work speakeasy" Fates, and a "living from train station to train station" Hermes. With our stage, I wanted the audience to feel like they were around the table like the rest of the Workers, hanging on every word.
We hope that enjoy the show, as we sing this song again and again.
